In a nutshell, the roof deck is the layer of roofing material that sits between the roof's structural components (joists and trusses), insulation, and waterproofing layers (coatings, roofing materials, layers, etc). The roof deck is the area of the roof where all of the other components are installed. As a result, it must be strong enough to support weight and durable enough to withstand some give.

Other factors to consider include the weight of any air conditioning equipment, the amount of rainfall in the area, and any potential snow accumulation. For added support, special features such as walking decks, rooftop swimming pools, or bars may be required.

The type of roof decking you need depends on whether you need it for a commercial or residential application. Wood will most likely be used for roof decking in residential buildings because it can withstand the weight of just about anything that is placed on top of it.
